Back when I was a chubby little girl, my gramma Adah taught me know to crochet.  I never actually got past the chain stitch, so I guess you could say she tried to teach me how.  Either way, I still remember it so I was able to work on this knot hairband.  If you can master a chain stitch, you can too!

*if you can't crochet--you missed out on chubby kid crochet time with your gramma--and you have a lot of time on your hands, you could always braid instead.  That would look pretty cool, but again, very time consuming.

Materials needed:
yarn and crochet hook

stitch:
one long chain @300 stitches
one short chain @160 stiches

Step 1:  Fold long chain so you have 3 chains together.  Place on solid surface as shown.

Step 2:  Cross the two ends of long chain as shown. 

Step 3:  Fold short chain so you have 3 chains together--same as long.  Lay atop long chain, folded up, as shown.

Step 4:  Place right side of short chain under right side of long chain as shown. 

 Step 5:  Cross left side of short chain under long chain loop as shown.

Step 6:  Ok--here's the TRICKY part--think over, under, over.  Take the short chain from step 4 and first bring over the right long loop.  THEN, place the same right side short chain under the short left side chain.  FINALLY, take the same right side short chain and place over the top loop.  So you really just did a weave step there.  Over, under, over.  It should like the image below.

 Step 7:  Start pulling all chains slowly together to form a knot, as shown below.

Step 8:  Depending on the give of your yarn, it should be long enough as is to complete the hairband.  Here, I just attached the ends together with a little hot glue (I trimmed off the excess yarn) and wrapped a ribbon around to secure.

 ***For an infant size, simply make the chain lengths in half of the original.

this is an infant-size.  the knot works great to clip a fancy flower on.
